Third party Applet background tweak

I'm using a third party applet which has a default white background.

What I'm trying to do is to
(1) put the applet in a table
(2) set table background to something I like
(3) set "transparency" of applet layer so background shows

Hope I'm explained it reasonably clear.

The applet displays nothing but is there so users can drag and drop item onto it.

1 and 2 are simple. If you don't have the source code, part 3 might be pretty challenging.
