I recently changed webhosts. Previous host had phpbb as an option. All I had to do was click a button and set it up. New host does not have phpbb, but does support it. I know nothing of ftp and sql and such. Is it possible for someone like me to add this to my website?? I've been to the php website, printed out the install instructions and browsed the forums there. The feeling I get from them is that if you dont know ftp, etc... you dont need to be doing this. And if it IS possible for me to do this, is there a walk-thru in plain english somewhere on the web? My members are not happy with the forum supplied by the new host, and we all really enjoyed using the phpbb. Can anyone help us??
Thanks for listening!
You would need FTP access to your webspace in order to upload the phpBB files. The webhost would me to be able to support mySQL because you'd need to create a database for the forum set up. Before going any further, take a look at what your webhost supports, list them here if need be, and maybe contact them asking for your FTP information, if they allow/support that, they should give you the info. _________________ White Papers
according to my control panel I have an FTP account and something that says 'my SQL administration'. Ok, that just made me sound really stupid, but when it comes to this stuff, thats how I feel. Even tho I think I am a reasonably intellegent person.
Before you go any further with this do you even have a backup of your old data base? The data base holds things like posts, users, ect ect. The easy way to do what you want would be to install phpbb then import your data base, but if you didn't back it up you might have lost the old fourm for good. _________________ Free MusicCpopServer Definition
Oh crap! I DID have a backup. In a fit of cleaning up my desktop, I deleted the file, and then promptly emptied the recycle bin . Ok, I can deal with losing all the old posts, etc... thats not a problem. We just want our phpbb back, lol.
BTW...am glad I ran across this place. A TON of usefull info here and such nice people. Thanks to ya'll for being here!!!
Do you have the info' required to set up the FTP, have you a FTP program?
If yes to the above, before starting anything through the FTP I'd suggest going to you website ACP (Admin Control Panel), click on MySQL Databases and on the next page you can create a new database naming it whatever you'd like, your forum title might be a good idea, I'd use lowercase letters for this. Make a note of the database name, and the password created for it.
Oce done, fire up your FTP program and log in by using the info' that your webhost provided (FTP site name/Username/Password. Once you're in that, you'll see a few "Directories/Folders" one of which will most likely be named Public_HTML or public_html, open that dirictory (double clicking on it). When that directory is open, rightmouse click in it, and you'll see it should say on the list of things "Create New Directory", click that, and create a name for the new directory, many folks type in the word "forums" (without the two "").
I'm now assuming that you have a phpBB forum set up file downloaded onto your computer, if not go get one from the phpBB downloads page, then open it up, and look for the instructions regarding to uploading and running the program set up. We could probably tell you how to do it here, but to be honest it'd be better/easier for you to follow the instructions provided.
Having said that, if you run into difficulties, I'm sure we can maybe help more. _________________ White Papers
